Wimbledon Star Threatens to Hit His Dad in Bizarre Interview

Flavio Cobolli, the 24-year-old Italian tennis player, made headlines at Wimbledon on Wednesday after a bizarre on-court interview following his first-round victory. Cobolli defeated Mariano Navone 1-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6(8) in a match that was suspended due to darkness on Tuesday evening. After saving six set points to secure the win, Cobolli expressed his frustration and made a startling comment about his father, Stefano, who also serves as his coach.

Cobolli's Emotional Outburst

During the interview, Cobolli could not stand still and admitted he "hates" his life. "Wow," he said. "Now I completely hate my life. It's always like this. Always run. Always fight." He then revealed his desire to "break something" and jokingly threatened to take out his frustration on his father. "I just wanna break something now," he said. "I need to hit something! I think I will hit my dad now."

When pressed further, Cobolli elaborated: "For sure. The first person that I will hit. I still don't know with what. You'll see tomorrow if he has a black thing on the face."

Father-Son Coaching Dynamic

Stefano Cobolli is a former professional player who transitioned into coaching after his playing career. He has been coaching Flavio since the age of 17. Despite the on-court tension, Flavio has previously spoken highly of their relationship. In an interview with the ATP Tour last year, he said: "My dad was a good player but he stopped when he was young, so he had a slightly lower ranking than me. He is an incredible coach now and we have a great relationship."

Flavio explained that they maintain a strict separation between tennis and family life. "When I was young, we wanted to keep tennis and our relationship separate. I used to play a lot of football and we would talk about that, but we didn't talk about tennis. He wanted me to improve alone and then he said when I was ready he would help. We started a few years ago and we have put in a lot of work together since we started and last year was really good. We want to do more now."

He added: "It is tough when your dad is your coach. As I said, when I was young we would just discuss football. As I have grown up and we have worked together, we have developed a really good relationship and I listen to him more now than ever before. I think we can do great things together."

Impact on Wimbledon Campaign

Cobolli's victory sets up a second-round meeting at the All England Club. Despite his emotional outburst, the Italian remains a promising talent on the ATP Tour. His father-coach relationship, while occasionally tense, has been a key factor in his development. As Cobolli continues his Wimbledon campaign, all eyes will be on his on-court demeanor and the dynamic with his father.
