Russell Kane Defends Comedy Freedom: 'I'm Not Woke, Just Not Ignorant'
Russell Kane speaks out on cancel culture in comedy

Award-winning comedian Russell Kane has strongly challenged prevailing narratives about cancel culture's impact on comedy, asserting that he doesn't know a single comedian who has been "cancelled" solely for their material.

The Comedy Freedom Debate

The 50-year-old comic, who began his stand-up career in 2004 and has since become a household name, told The Mirror that comedians willing to "offend a minority group" are actually finding success in today's climate. "I don't know a comedian who's been cancelled for doing comedy," Kane stated emphatically.

He added a provocative observation about contemporary comedy trends: "If only I was brave enough to say some slightly more outrageous and hurtful things, I'd probably be number one on Netflix. It's not my type of comedy but my point is, I think there's more freedom of speech now than there was."

Addressing Recent Controversies

Kane's comments come amid recent criticism faced by fellow comedians including Jimmy Carr and Jack Whitehall for performing at the Riyadh Comedy Festival in Saudi Arabia, given the country's human rights record.

The comedian made a crucial distinction about these incidents: "That wasn't for the comedy, that was for where they went to do comedy. A comedian might be cancelled for someone he's touched or something he's done to someone, I don't know anyone who's been cancelled for a joke."

Defining 'Woke' and Personal Philosophy

On the much-debated concept of 'woke culture', Kane offered a straightforward perspective: "It's such a weird word because the opposite of woke is asleep. I don't want to be asleep."

He elaborated with characteristic bluntness: "Just because I recognise that someone of colour has had a different life journey to me - I'm not woke, I'm just not f**king ignorant. It's ignorance."

Beyond comedy controversies, Kane is currently teaming up with This Morning's Sian Welby to host ITV's The Spin Off, a new free-to-play quiz app offering prize opportunities. The self-described "secret quizzer" has an impressive track record in game shows, having previously won Celebrity Mastermind, Beat the Chasers and The Weakest Link.

Kane revealed his rigorous preparation routine: "I train like a boxer because my stand-up is incredibly energetic - I got to 35 and thought, 'How can I slow down aging?' My daily regime is 60 minutes while quizzes are playing. I'll put The Chase on or The 1% Club. I'm training my mind and body like some sort of renaissance man."

Looking ahead, the comedian expressed ambition to become a Chaser himself, following in the footsteps of Joe Pasquale on Beat the Chasers. He's also expanding his creative horizons: "I'm currently learning how to speak Shakespearean verse properly because of my aspirations to act. My tour finishes in December - the longest tour I've ever done - and I want to do something completely different with my life next year."

Now aged 50, Kane follows what he calls "five pillars of wellness" to maintain his health:

  • Avoiding processed foods
  • Regular exercise
  • Stress minimization
  • Strengthening relationships
  • Taking evidence-based supplements

The comedian isn't shy about cutting toxic influences from his life, stating: "A lot of us spend our lives hanging around with drains because we've been friends with them for years and we feel bad, but it's time to say, 'bye t**t,' and get that toxicity out of your life."

Despite his success, Kane maintains a relatively small circle of friends and family, acknowledging that his demanding work schedule often limits his social availability. He shares ten-year-old daughter Mina with entrepreneur wife Lindsey Cole and prioritizes family time above showbusiness networking.

"People tend to cut me off because I work so hard," he admitted. "I'm very friendly with celebrity types but I've kept my friends from home, my mum, my wife and my daughter. That probably holds me back in showbiz. I'm not falling out of clubs with the right people but I can't help it."
