Peter Kay Rejected Netflix Deal After Bizarre Air Fryer Gift
Peter Kay rejected Netflix deal over air fryer gift

Beloved British comedian Peter Kay has revealed he turned down a significant offer from streaming giant Netflix, with the deal reportedly derailed by a bizarre gift: an air fryer.

The Unusual Netflix Proposal

The revelation came during an appearance on Capital Breakfast with hosts Jordan North, Sian Welby, and Chris Stark. Kay explained that Netflix contacted him last year with a proposal to license his iconic TV show, Phoenix Nights, for their platform.

However, the comedian expressed reservations about the show's content in the current climate. "Basically, it’s not very politically correct now," Kay stated, highlighting that the series was made in a different era. He was also unenthusiastic about the prospect of adding content warnings to the episodes.

The discussion took an unexpected turn when Kay disclosed that Netflix attempted to sweeten the deal by sending him a gift through the post. "Anyway, they sent me an air fryer," the comedian told the radio hosts, prompting laughter from the studio.

Not the Fryer He Was Hoping For

Kay, known for his observational humour, even managed to find comedy in the specific model he received. He joked about his slight disappointment with the brand, saying, "It was a Phillips air fryer, it weren’t even a Ninja one. But I was grateful."

Despite the unconventional courting attempt, the Bolton-born funnyman ultimately decided to decline the offer. His focus remains on his highly successful comeback tour, which has seen him performing to sold-out arenas across the UK.

A Phoenix Nights Film is Written and Waiting

In a significant update for fans, Peter Kay confirmed that a film version of Phoenix Nights has already been written. "I have written a film of Phoenix Nights. And it’s written and it’s done," he revealed.

However, he is deliberately holding back on production due to technological considerations. The film's storyline involves numerous flashbacks, and Kay is waiting for de-aging technology to improve.

"I’m waiting for the de-aging process to come into fruition," he explained. "I don’t want to be using really bad makeup to make people look young." He added that he has been actively researching the capabilities of such technology and may move forward with the project once his current tour concludes.
