More than 600 trombonists assembled in Ipswich, Queensland, over the weekend in an attempt to set a new world record for the largest trombone ensemble. The south-east Queensland council claims the event was a success, with the final count exceeding 600 participants, beating the previous world record of 368 musicians set in Washington DC in 2012.
Record-Breaking Performance
The musicians gathered at Tulmur Place to perform the Broadway classic Seventy-Six Trombones from the musical The Music Man. The Ipswich mayor, Teresa Harding, confirmed the achievement in a statement, saying: 'To see hundreds of musicians of all skill levels in Tulmur Place ready to try and set a new world record is an extraordinary achievement and one that every participant, volunteer and supporter can be incredibly proud of.'
Community Effort
The event drew participants from across the region, ranging from amateur players to seasoned professionals. The record attempt was organized by the Ipswich City Council, which hopes the event will boost local tourism and community spirit. The previous record was set in 2012 by a group of trombonists in Washington DC.
Musical Significance
Seventy-Six Trombones, written by Meredith Willson, is a well-known march from the 1957 musical The Music Man. The song's lyrics describe a parade led by 76 trombones, making it a fitting choice for the record attempt. The performance was part of a larger celebration of music and community in Ipswich.
