Jason Manford Claps Back at 'Unfunny' Critics After Royal Variety Hosting Gig
Jason Manford hits back at Royal Variety critics

Comedian Jason Manford has launched a spirited defence of his performance after facing a wave of criticism from viewers for hosting this year's Royal Variety Performance.

Social Media Backlash and Manford's Fiery Replies

The Salford-born comic, 44, took to the stage at the Royal Albert Hall for the prestigious annual charity event, which was recorded in November and broadcast on ITV on Sunday, 21 December 2025. While his jokes about class and parenting appeared to amuse the royal attendees, including the Prince and Princess of Wales, a segment of the home audience was less impressed.

Viewers quickly took to social media to voice their disapproval. One critic commented, "Nice enough bloke but he ain't that funny," while another bluntly stated, "Can't believe Jason Manford is rehashing all this stuff about his brother and class. Been doing it for years."

Rather than ignoring the barbs, Manford engaged directly. To one particularly harsh comment, he simply replied, "Merry Christmas mate." When the critic persisted, Manford shot back with, "And a Happy New Year xx." In another exchange, after a viewer suggested he was shouting, Manford explained, "It’s a a big room sweetie."

A Night of Stars and Spectacle

Despite the online furore, the evening itself was a glittering showcase of entertainment, raising crucial funds for the Royal Variety Charity, which supports entertainers and their families in times of need.

The line-up featured a host of big names. Westlife performed in matching black suits, while a special segment celebrated the Live Aid musical 'Just For One Day', featuring appearances from Sir Bob Geldof and Midge Ure. Stephen Fry appeared as Lady Bracknell, and Jessie J delivered an emotional rendition of her song.

The show also included performances from Britain's Got Talent winner Harry Moulding, a dance number led by Strictly's Johannes Radebe, and a series of political impressions. The grand finale saw 400 performers, including Michael Ball and Matt Lucas, mark the 40th anniversary of Les Misérables.

Praise Amidst the Criticism

For every detractor, there were plenty of fans praising Manford's hosting skills. Supporters flooded social media with positive messages, with one writing, "You're brilliant on Royal Variety! Definitely need to host again next year!" Another admirer posted, "How good does @JasonManford look!!! I mean DAMMN the crush I have on him."

The mixed reaction highlights the subjective nature of comedy, proving that even when performing for royalty and a television audience of millions, you can't please everyone. Manford's decision to confront his critics head-on, however, has certainly kept the conversation about his performance alive long after the curtain fell.
