Netflix Hidden Gem with True Detective Vibe You're Missing

True Detective fans are being urged to binge a hidden Netflix show that shares a similar atmosphere. Released in 2022, the supernatural thriller Archive 81 centres on Dan Turner (Mamoudou Athie), an archivist and film buff who is approached by a mysterious mega-corporation to restore and digitise old tapes salvaged from a fire for a substantial fee.

Although the job seems straightforward, Dan is instructed to carry out the work at a remote facility, accompanied by the company's head, Virgin Davenport (Martin Donovan). As he watches the tapes, he becomes increasingly connected to the woman featured on them. He soon discovers that the job is not what it initially appeared to be, uncovering long-buried secrets and a conspiracy spanning generations—and even worlds.

Netflix's synopsis teases: "Reconstructing the work of a documentary filmmaker named Melody Pendras (Dina Shihabi), he is drawn into her investigation of a dangerous cult at the Visser apartment building. As the season unfolds across these two timelines, Dan slowly finds himself obsessed with uncovering what happened to Melody. When the two characters form a mysterious connection, Dan becomes convinced he can save her from the terrifying end she met 25 years ago."

The series was created by Rebecca Sonnenshine, known for her work on the 2025 film The Housemaid, Prime Video series The Boys, and supernatural teen drama The Vampire Diaries. Archive 81 was loosely inspired by a podcast of the same name, but sadly the show was not renewed for a second season, leaving fans "so mad." However, the story does provide satisfying answers to many of the main narrative's mysteries.

"One of the best binge worthy horror shows I have seen! I absolutely loved it! I'm so mad there isn't a Season 2!" gushed one fan. Another penned: "This is some of the best slow burn mystery horror out there. It's a crime that this never got a second season." A third noted: "A fun mix of occult and found footage film. It gives me a True Detective vibe (although the performances are not quite up to that level)." Another remarked: "One of the most novel stories I have seen in the last two decades with excellent acting and filmography without trying too hard. Mysterious, dark, engaging and bizarre."

Archive 81 is now streaming on Netflix.
