Cate Blanchett has said she would be “wildly open” to collaborating with director David Fincher on an English-language spin-off of the hit Netflix series Squid Game. The Oscar-winning actress made a surprise cameo appearance in the show’s third and final season as a recruiter based in Los Angeles, prompting speculation about a US-set adaptation.
Speaking to Variety, Blanchett described the offer to join the show as “came out of the blue” and noted the production was shrouded in secrecy. “Because it’s such a cult series and they were shooting in LA of all places, everyone was on a need-to-know basis,” she said. For her brief role, Blanchett played the traditional Korean game ddakji in a back alley and had to practise intensively.
Rumours have circulated for months that Fincher, who directed Blanchett in 2008’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and has a long-term deal with Netflix, could be behind a US-set spin-off. Blanchett, however, said she has no inside information. “I’d love to work with David again… but no, I don’t know anything more than you do. I’m not being coy. I really don’t,” she stated.
Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has said he did not intend Blanchett’s cameo to set up a US spin-off, but added that he would “definitely” be watching if one materialises. Blanchett concluded: “In a world that is so beautifully, magically created like that, for sure. They’re amazing world-builders.”
