Hush: Mike Flanagan's 92%-Rated Horror Leaves Fans Breathless

Mike Flanagan's 2016 horror film Hush, currently streaming on Netflix, has viewers on the edge of their seats. The film, which holds an impressive 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes, is being rediscovered as Flanagan's new adaptation of Stephen King's Carrie tops Prime Video charts.

A Hidden Gem in the Horror Genre

Hush centres on a deaf and mute author living in near solitude who becomes the target of a masked assailant inside her own home. Flanagan co-wrote the screenplay with lead actress Kate Siegel, who also directed an episode of Carrie and plays Adelaide in the series.

Flanagan has built a reputation in horror through previous Netflix adaptations including The Fall of the House of Usher, Midnight Mass and The Haunting of Hill House. Two films bearing the same title are available on the streaming service, with this referring to the 2016 release that does not feature Gwyneth Paltrow.

Viewers Praise the Film's Tension

Fans have taken to warning prospective viewers, with one posting online: "Tension thicker than your kids birthday cake. Cut it with a knife or shoot it with a crossbow. A delightful flick indeed."

Another confessed: "I held on to my breath till the credits started rolling and I am still in that mood of the film created by it. These kind of gems come only once in a while! This has been one of the most perfect horror/thrillers I have recently watched! The kind of film that will always be remembered once you watch it."

Grounded in Reality

Several viewers noted the film keeps audiences on edge throughout, with one admitting they were literally gripping their seat from start to finish. Another chimed in: "This is just one of those twisted movies that gives you so much anxiety!"

They went on to explain: "Because this isn't fantastical or out of the realm of possibility like many horror movies, this movie is really grounded in reality, making it all the more terrifying to the audience. Imagining yourself in Maddie's place just feels horrifying, and it makes you root for her all the more."

"This movie creates its horror through tension and fear, not through jump scares or cheap frights, and I think that is one reason why Mike Flanagan has the reputation he does today. This is a great horror movie you should definitely watch."

Hush is streaming on Netflix, Plex and Shudder.
