Sony confirms end of physical games by 2028
Sony has announced it will cease production of all physical games from 2028, a move that has triggered widespread backlash from fans and even prompted a mocking response from Domino's Pizza UK. The decision means that future PlayStation consoles, including the anticipated PlayStation 6, are expected to be all-digital.
Domino's joins the criticism
Domino's Pizza UK tweeted: "Makes about as much sense as us changing to digital pizzas." The fast-food chain's jab resonated with fans who fear losing the ability to buy, sell, and share physical game discs.
Fan outrage and threats to switch to PC
Many PlayStation loyalists expressed anger on social media. PlayStation YouTuber MBG wrote: "#NOTBUYINGPS6 unless it supports physical games." Another user, General (@GeneralJosovic), stated: "There’s no reason to stay with PlayStation anymore. After more than 30 years with Sony, I’m switching to PC. With no physical games, there isn’t a single valid reason to stay with PlayStation instead of buying a PC. Sony has officially killed its own appeal. PC has won."
One X user, Sofoets (@mosuyanagi), succinctly predicted: "PS6 gonna be the worst console gen of all time." Another commenter, Colin (@IntroSpecktive), questioned: "So do Sony realise that when they drop a $1,500 PS6 with no physical discs to collect that everyone is just going to get PC and Steam because it’s the superior digital option or are they just really that f***ing stupid?"
Consumer concerns over digital-only model
Critics argue that digital games are often more expensive, cannot be shared or resold, and can be revoked from libraries, meaning consumers do not truly own their purchases. Dustin Furman (@DustinCanFly) highlighted price disparities: "Look at the prices of physical vs digital on PSN for older titles."
Sony's rationale and future implications
While statistics show that most players already buy games digitally, Sony's decision eliminates physical options entirely. The PlayStation 6, rumored to cost £1,000 or more, could benefit from lower manufacturing costs without a disc drive. However, the move comes amid rising memory costs and follows Rockstar's announcement that GTA 6 will not launch on disc. Sony has not officially confirmed the PS6 will be all-digital, but the cessation of physical game production makes it seem inevitable. The negative sentiment may persist, casting a shadow over PlayStation's future as fans weigh the benefits of switching to PC gaming.
