By a Thread review – soulful circus with a sprinkle of magic

One Fell Swoop Circus's By a Thread, now showing at Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh, until 30 August, stands out in the crowded circus genre through its emotional group dynamics and individual skills. The Melbourne company has brought back the show after its Edinburgh debut last year proved a hit.

One good idea, thoroughly explored

The show, originally made a decade ago, is built around a single concept: one giant rope, two pulleys, seven bodies, and everything they can do together. Looped from the ceiling, the rope becomes a slackline to walk across, a trapeze to swing on, a vertical climb, a diagonal slide, and more.

The pacing is gentle with a dreamy mood, but steadily engrossing, with the soulful soundtrack slowly casting a spell. While the skills are a given, the piece becomes great theatre when performers' personalities emerge, making the mechanics of the rope and group dynamics the interesting core.

Individual skills and human connection

Individual talents shine, such as Ellie Grow's mind-blowing handstands. She is more secure on two palms than most people are on two feet, turning a quick trick into choreography with rhythm, timing, and wit. A beautifully tender duet, metres up in the air, focuses not on acrobatics but human connection—hands and eyes meeting, warmth and friendship, all subtly done.

The emotion feels real, and the tone is perfectly judged. Ropes aside, that is what truly elevates these acrobats. After Edinburgh, the show goes on tour.
