A Spanish period drama streaming on Netflix has been described as 'absolutely exceptional' by viewers, with some claiming it outshines popular series such as Downton Abbey and Bridgerton. The Cook of Castamar, originally titled La cocinera de Castamar, is adapted from the novel by Fernando J. Muñez and consists of 12 episodes, each around 50 minutes long.
Set in early-18th-century Madrid, the series follows the love story between an agoraphobic cook and a widowed nobleman. It stars Michelle Jenner and Roberto Enríquez in the lead roles, supported by a talented cast including Hugo Silva, María Hervás, Fiorella Faltoyano, Jean Cruz, and Paula Usero.
The show was created for television by Tatiana Rodríguez and co-directed by Iñaki Peñafiel and Norberto López Amado. Filming took place in outdoor locations in Madrid, Cuenca, and Segovia, with the Duke's palace, Castamar, depicted by Madrid's Palacio del Infante Don Luis in Boadilla del Monte.
Viewers have praised the series for its storytelling, plot twists, set design, costumes, cinematography, music, and acting. One IMDB user wrote: 'Absolutely Exceptional! One of the most beautiful period piece shows I've seen. I dare say it may be better than Downtown Abbey (yup I said it).' Another commented: 'Fantastic! The series never dragged, for 12 episodes. It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way.'
All episodes of The Cook of Castamar are available to stream on Netflix.
