The emergency cordon around the village of Glenmore in the Cairngorms could be lifted on Friday, according to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS). Road and access restrictions have been in place since a wildfire broke out near Ryvoan Bothy, close to Aviemore, on July 15.
Ongoing Firefighting Efforts
More than 500 firefighters have been deployed to combat the blaze, which has scorched an estimated 25 square kilometres of land. As of Wednesday night, four fire appliances and around 20 firefighters remain on site, supported by partners and helicopter assistance.
Thermal imaging drones are being flown twice daily to detect hot spots in the affected area. This work will continue in difficult terrain for the foreseeable future as crews work to extinguish deep-seated fires.
Potential Reopening and Planning
SFRS stated that planning is underway to potentially reopen the Glenmore area on Friday, subject to the success of ongoing firefighting efforts. Any changes to the cordon depend on ground conditions and require agreement from all multi-agency responders.
Highland Council has been engaging with local businesses about the possible reopening. Once the area is accessible, SFRS will provide further information and guidance on which areas are safe to visit.
Forestry and Land Scotland and the Cairngorms National Park are implementing a public access management plan for forest paths, biking trails, and roads, which will include signage and fencing.
