Wimbledon Fans Want McEnroe Replaced by Andy Roddick

Some tennis fans are calling for ESPN to replace John McEnroe with Andy Roddick on their Wimbledon coverage after the 2003 US Open champion joined the broadcaster's team this year. McEnroe, alongside his younger brother Patrick, has led ESPN's coverage of The Championships since the network began exclusive broadcasting in 2012.

Roddick's Return to TV Wins Over Viewers

ESPN added Roddick to their summer lineup for the first time in over a decade, marking his return to Grand Slam television work. He previously covered Wimbledon for the BBC in 2015. The network also brought in Chris Eubanks and CoCo Vandeweghe, while longtime analysts Brad Gilbert, Darren Cahill, and Pam Shriver were absent during the fortnight.

Roddick's presence was well received by viewers. On social media, fans expressed a clear preference for the last American man to win a Grand Slam over McEnroe. One user on X said: "Less John McEnroe talking, more Andy Roddick talking. More Chris Eubanks, too!" Another added: "Can Andy Roddick replace John McEnroe for good, please?"

Growing Calls for Change

A third fan asked: "Please WHEN will they take John McEnroe off the air. They had Andy Roddick doing commentary in the studio, and it was SO MUCH BETTER." Another viewer stated: "The tennis world has known it was time for a changing of the guard long before Roddick stepped into the booth." One more comment read: "There's no doubt Andy Roddick is a major talent as an analyst and is a great addition for ESPN."

Daniel Kaplan of Awful Announcing, a sports media industry website, also advocated for a transition. Kaplan said: "I like McEnroe ... But it's time for ESPN to call it a day with him, at least as lead announcer, and turn the booth over to the likes of Roddick and other young former players like Chris Eubanks, who is also killing it." He added: "If I ran ESPN tennis ... I would start my transition from the McEnroe era soon."

McEnroe's Polarizing Status

The three-time Wimbledon champion remains a divisive figure beyond ESPN. On the BBC's coverage, a poll by Express Sport named him the worst pundit, with 25 per cent of the vote, yet he also topped an alternative poll as the most liked. His outfit during the men's final also drew criticism, with one viewer asking on X: "What kind of outfit is John McEnroe wearing, for God's sake?" Another added: "Someone tell John McEnroe to button up a bit, please."
