Wimbledon Diary: Sabalenka's Dog Plea, Rufus, and Towels

Aryna Sabalenka has publicly urged Wimbledon to reverse its policy banning players from bringing dogs into the grounds, but the All England Club already caters to canines with a secret doggy paddling pool and toilet area behind Henman Hill, primarily used by security dogs and guide dogs. With temperatures expected to reach 31°C next week, the pool is set to be popular.

Sabalenka's Plea for Dogs

After defeating McCartney Kessler on Wednesday, Sabalenka explained her reasoning: 'I can understand why they made this decision. If the dog does something wrong inside of this historical place, it’s probably going to take a bit of time to replace. They’re probably afraid of damage inside. But I have to say all of our dogs are very well trained.' She added, 'It just sometimes hurts to leave him at the house by himself. He suffers staying alone. It really hurts my feelings. It’s just like a little fluffy thing that always want cuddles and love. Going to the park with him, walking around, is also like some sort of meditation for me. Wimbledon, please, I beg you, let the dogs inside.' However, the club is unlikely to change its stance for now.

Rufus the Hawk Still Active

Wimbledon officials have downplayed concerns that Rufus the Hawk, now 18, is slowing down. Rufus has patrolled the courts since the 2008 championships when he was 16 weeks old. Hawks typically live 20 to 30 years, and fears about his age are unfounded. He is aided by six fake owls that help deter pigeons from damaging the grass.

Rory McIlroy's Centre Court Appearance

On Wednesday, the Royal Box received a raucous reception, featuring several members of Europe's victorious Ryder Cup team, including captain Luke Donald, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose, and Rory McIlroy. McIlroy wore his Green Jacket from Augusta, following Danny Willett's similar display after his 2016 win.

Strawberry Towels Outsell Classic

Wimbledon's official £40 towels are the top seller, but this year a 'strawberry red' towel introduced as a one-off is outselling the classic green and purple version. An insider noted, 'We always change the colour of our second towel every year, but it is unusual for it to outsell the traditional one.' Used balls also sell well, while the official melamine picnic cup has already sold out.
