BBC Radio 2 presenter Vernon Kay has spoken candidly about a frightening near-death experience that occurred during a family holiday, an ordeal that remains vividly etched in his memory. The broadcaster, now 51, reflected on numerous childhood vacations, many of which were joyful, but one particular getaway proved exceptionally dramatic and life-threatening.
Childhood Holidays and a Fateful Trip
In a recent interview with The Times, Vernon Kay fondly recalled the family holidays of his youth, which often involved long weekends in British seaside destinations like Blackpool, Torquay, and Newquay. He also mentioned cherished trips to Jersey and the advent of package holidays abroad with Monarch Airlines. However, it was a villa stay in Praia da Luz on the Algarve that hosted a terrifying incident.
The Poolside Panic
"One time I saved my brother from drowning," Vernon recounted. "He dived in the pool and started panicking, so he owes me one there." This brief but intense moment of rescue has lingered with him over the years, highlighting the unpredictable dangers that can arise even during leisurely family vacations. The holiday was also memorable for his mother's 40th birthday celebrations, where Vernon tried peri peri chicken for the first time and witnessed his mother smoking her first ever cigarette, resulting in a night of coughing.
Modern Family Adventures
Today, Vernon Kay tends to holiday with his wife, Tess Daly, and their two daughters, Phoebe and Amber. Last year, he revealed on his radio show that the family harbors ambitions to explore more of America via campervan. Just last month, he treated his Instagram followers to snapshots from a family jaunt to New York City, describing the city as "cold yet still fantastic" with "great locations, great views, great food."
Professional Changes and Speculation
This break followed a significant professional change for Tess Daly, who bowed out from Strictly Come Dancing alongside co-presenter Claudia Winkleman during the 2025 series. After an 11-year partnership hosting the programme, both have embarked on new ventures. Tess briefly returned to the BBC to front The One Show with Vernon, while also focusing on her swimwear enterprise. Claudia Winkleman has announced an upcoming BBC chat show, set to debut this month.
Though replacements for the Strictly presenting duo remain unconfirmed, Vernon has floated two potential candidates he believes would excel in the position. In a chat with The Metro, he remarked that Alex Jones should be on the floor, calling her "probably the funniest presenter I've worked with" and perfect for live TV. He also suggested Rylan Clark, noting that anyone else would need to be "made of liquid gold."
Vernon Kay's reflections serve as a poignant reminder of how family holidays can blend joy with unexpected peril, creating memories that last a lifetime.
