Vernon Kay shared a heartfelt family moment live on BBC Radio 2 on Friday (October 16), revealing that his eldest daughter Phoebe was celebrating her 22nd birthday. Speaking to fellow presenter Sara Cox during his mid-morning show, the broadcaster admitted he could hardly believe how quickly the years had gone.

A birthday announcement on air

Vernon told Sara: "It's our eldest daughter's birthday today." Sara immediately offered her congratulations before Vernon revealed exactly how old his daughter had turned. "Phoebe's 22," he informed her, leading the BBC Radio 2 host to wish Phoebe a happy birthday.

Reflecting on the milestone, Vernon questioned: "Where? Where has that time gone?" Sara empathised with her colleague, acknowledging she grasped the sentiment entirely. She subsequently characterised the milestone as "Unbelievable," as the duo discussed how rapidly the years appear to elapse.

Plans for the celebration

The discussion shifted to how Vernon intended to commemorate the occasion, with Sara enquiring whether he planned to escort his daughter out to celebrate or whether she would be venturing out with companions. The broadcaster hinted there might be a celebratory toast or two planned, telling Sara: "Oh, we might be popping a cork or two." Sara encouraged him to enjoy the moment before the pair exchanged warm wishes for the weekend.

Away from the radio studio, Vernon also paid tribute to Phoebe on social media, sharing a collection of family photographs charting her journey from childhood to adulthood. Alongside the pictures, he wrote: "Happy Birthday PHOEBE KAY!!! 22 Time flies!! A joy watching you become the woman you are!"

Recent family moments

The presenter has also recently shared a nostalgic moment with his daughter after the pair attended a Washington Commanders NFL game in the United States. Posting photographs from their outing, he highlighted their shared sporting memories, writing: "Same sport same Washington Commanders years apart."

Phoebe, the eldest of Vernon's two daughters with fellow presenter Tess Daly, has also been spending time in New York City. Earlier this year, she offered a glimpse into her life across the Atlantic by sharing footage of her experiences in the Big Apple. The footage prompted an emotional response from her mum, who commented: "Made me emotional watching this [heart emojis]. Mum xx."

Vernon and Tess, who also share a teenage daughter, Amber, announced their separation in May after years together. In a statement announcing their split, the couple said they "remain great friends and most importantly, fully committed to our roles as loving and supportive parents, which will always be our priority".
