An American man who regularly shares his experiences as a US expat in the UK was left stranded after his Airbnb host cancelled his booking upon arrival, only to be rescued by a local woman who offered him and his companions a place to stay.
Airbnb Booking Falls Through
Kalani, who documents his adventures as an American in the UK on social media, had booked a night at an Airbnb in Cumbria. Upon arrival, he discovered that the lockbox containing the keys would not open. The host then informed him that the reservation had to be cancelled, leaving him with no accommodation.
“Long story short, they told us that they had to pretty much cancel our reservation, and I had nowhere to sleep last night because the hotels were booked up, and I was gonna just drive back to London,” Kalani said, noting that the return journey was over 250 miles.
Local Resident Steps In
After sharing his predicament online, a woman named Eileen messaged him, saying, “Hey, I have two rooms if you guys wanna come stay with us.” Tired and unable to face the five-hour drive back to London, Kalani and his companions accepted her offer.
“And let me tell you this. If I could have one person to show the world the hospitality of the folks here in the UK... so, Cumbrian hospitality is absolutely incredible,” Kalani said, displaying a photograph of Eileen on screen.
Unexpected Hospitality
Kalani recounted that Eileen invited three strangers into her home while her husband was asleep. “He woke up and was like ‘Oh, hello’. He didn’t know we were gonna be there when he woke up.” The next morning, Eileen prepared breakfast for the group, which Kalani joked surpassed some bed and breakfasts they had stayed in.
Kalani emphasized that claims about a lack of hospitality in the UK are “wrong.” Eileen brushed off the praise, attributing it to “Cumbrian hospitality.”
Gratitude and Community Response
“So all that being said, I think if there were more Eileens in the world, we would all be in a better spot. I even tried to give her money, and she just wouldn’t take it. So, incredible, incredible experience,” Kalani said. He added that he had encountered “some of the kindest people ever” during his travels in the UK.
In the comments section of his post, users praised Cumbria. One wrote: “Cumbria is one of those places you can end up talking for hours with a total stranger. We're definitely a friendly bunch.” Another said: “Anyone who lives in Cumbria knows that public transport and hospitality are just not reliable, so they will not hesitate to help people.” A third suggested sending Eileen flowers, saying she would be “well chuffed.”
