Tom Skilling: The Bear Season 5's Surprise Guest Star

Tom Skilling, the legendary Chicago meteorologist, makes a surprise appearance in Season 5 of The Bear, playing himself as a restaurant patron. Known for his 46-year tenure as WGN-TV's chief meteorologist, Skilling's cameo adds local authenticity to the show's Chicago setting.

Who Is Tom Skilling?

Tom Skilling, 74, served as WGN-TV Chicago's chief meteorologist from 1978 until his retirement in 2024. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he grew up in Westfield, New Jersey, before his family moved to Aurora, Illinois. At age 14, he began working for WKKD and WKKD-FM, where he noticed their weather reports were inaccurate because they relied on Chicago forecasts instead of Aurora. He struck a deal to deliver his own reports, which proved correct, earning him his own weather program. He presented Aurora forecasts three times weekly before securing a position at Aurora's WLXT-TV at age 18.

Career Highlights

Skilling worked at WKOW-TV and WTSO radio while studying at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His first major television role came in 1975 at WITI-TV in Milwaukee, where his forecasts featured a sock puppet named Albert the Alley Cat. In 1978, he returned to Chicago as WGN-TV's chief meteorologist, a role he held until 2024. He is believed to have become the highest-paid weather broadcaster in the United States and maintained a popular column, Ask Tom, in the Chicago Tribune until 2022.

Family Connection to Enron Scandal

Skilling has never married and keeps his private life largely unknown. However, he is the brother of Jeffrey Skilling, the disgraced former CEO of Enron Corporation. Enron declared bankruptcy in 2001 after fraudulent practices were exposed, leading to the collapse of accounting firm Arthur Andersen. Jeffrey Skilling faced 35 criminal charges, including conspiracy, insider trading, and securities fraud, resulting in a $45 million fine and a 24-year prison sentence. After appeals, he served 12 years and was released in 2019.

The Bear Season 5 Cameo

In The Bear Season 5, Skilling appears as a local celebrity who secures a reservation at the restaurant on its most crucial night. The show, starring Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Ayo Edebiri, follows the chaotic Chicago restaurant team facing financial ruin and a fierce storm while striving for a Michelin star. Skilling's cameo adds a touch of real-world Chicago fame to the fictional drama. Season 5 is available to stream on Disney+.
