Sandy Gall leaves £331k to children in final will

The family of legendary ITV newsreader Sandy Gall have inherited a substantial sum following his death in June, as detailed in his final will. The esteemed broadcaster, who enjoyed a career spanning more than half a century, left an estate valued at over £330,000 to his four children.

A Lifetime in Journalism

Sandy Gall passed away at the age of 97 on 29 June at his home in Kent. His family confirmed the news with a statement celebrating a life they described as 'generously and courageously lived'.

Born in 1927 and raised in Scotland, Gall's journalistic journey began in 1952 as a sub-editor at the Aberdeen Press and Journal. He swiftly moved to Reuters as a trainee foreign correspondent a year later.

His most prominent role began in the 1960s when he joined ITN, later becoming a co-presenter on the flagship ITV News at Ten, a position he held for 22 years until his retirement in 1992.

Covering Historic Global Events

Throughout his distinguished career, Gall was on the front lines of some of the most significant events of the 20th century. His reporting portfolio included:

  • The assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963
  • The Vietnam War
  • The Soviet-Afghan War
  • The American Civil Rights movement, during which he conducted a notable interview with Martin Luther King in 1965.

His deep involvement in Afghanistan coverage led to a lasting humanitarian commitment. Together with his wife, Eleanor, whom he met in Budapest in 1956, he founded Sandy Gall's Afghanistan Appeal. The charity, which focused on aiding disabled Afghans, particularly war casualties, operated for nearly four decades.

A Personal Legacy and Final Bequest

Gall was married to Eleanor for 60 years, following their wedding in 1958, though the union experienced a brief separation. Eleanor passed away in 2018, seven years before her husband.

The will, prepared nine years prior to his death, stipulated that his entire estate be left to his son and three daughters. At the time of his passing, the estate was valued at £632,749. After necessary deductions, the net sum inherited by his children amounted to the still considerable figure of £331,303.

One of his children, Carlotta Gall, has followed in her father's footsteps, building a renowned career as a journalist reporting on conflicts in Afghanistan and Bosnia for the New York Times.

Sandy Gall's legacy is thus twofold: a public legacy of courageous journalism and significant charitable work, and a private legacy providing for his family, as detailed in his final will.
