Family Statement Confirms Passing
The family statement read: "It is with immense sadness that the whānau [extended family] of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday, 13th July, in Sydney, Australia. Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life. The loss was sudden and unexpected, but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer-free." The family expressed gratitude to the staff at St Vincent's Private Hospital for their care and requested privacy as they navigate the loss.
Resurfaced Clip from The Assembly
Following his death, a clip from the Australian version of The Assembly—a unique interview series where autistic, neurodivergent, or learning-disabled individuals question celebrities—has gone viral. In the UK, participants have included Danny Dyer, Nicola Sturgeon, Stephen Fry, Gary Lineker, and Jade Thirlwall. Neill appeared in the Australian adaptation's first episode in 2024.
During the interview, Neill was asked: "What is the best lesson you learned from your parents?" He paused, visibly moved, and tearfully replied: "Wow, that's a really interesting question. I don't know why that question's moved me so much, but it has." He recalled his mother's stoic advice during a difficult period at university: "I think I'm having a breakdown… and she just looked at me, and she said: 'Well, you're just going to have to pull yourself together, aren't you?'" Neill smiled as he concluded: "I think that was the best lesson I learnt from her, is sometimes you just have to pull yourself together. It's a tough lesson, but it's a good one."
Fan Tributes Pour In
The clip has moved fans to share their condolences. One fan wrote: "R.I.P. Farewell to not only a great actor and obviously to a great person." Another said: "I think this is an appropriate time to revisit this clip. RIP Sam." A third added: "After hearing of his passing, this is the first video I thought of. Rest in peace, Sam. May your children carry with them the longstanding lessons you taught them, and thank you for the memories you gave me through your work." Others echoed the sentiment, with one fan noting: "How profound watching this now, today, RIP to the great Sam Neill." Another wrote: "Great response. Back here after his passing. He will be missed. Rest well, Sam."
