Rylan Clark rants at BBC over brand name rule

Rylan Clark has again criticised the BBC's advertising rules, saying the need to constantly keep them in mind was "getting to [him]" during his Radio 2 show with co-host Sally Boazman.

The 37-year-old presenter vented his frustration after Sally pulled him up on the corporation's commercial guidelines during a chat about her nightmare week.

M&S exchange sparks rant

Sally mentioned being near "a famous supermarket", prompting Rylan to ask which retailer she meant. "What one? I don't care," he said. When Sally claimed the name "just had letters in it", Rylan declared it was M&S.

"I'm glad you said it," Sally replied, insisting she was concerned about breaking the rules. "You're not supposed to do that, [you're meant to say] 'Other supermarkets are available'," she pointed out.

But Rylan launched into a humorous rant about the BBC's approach to brand mentions, saying: "People know! People know there are other supermarkets available, I don't work for M&S, I'm not flogging M&S, I've not had an affair with Percy Pig, people know! And it's getting to me now, it's like, 'Other chocolates are available' people know, they can see them!"

Playful back-and-forth

Sally then suggested their boss wouldn't be impressed, saying Rylan had yet to "get the text from" their manager, who she claimed would tell him, 'I've told you many times'. "I'm sure I will now," Rylan replied. She reminded him: "Do not mention brand names."

The conversation turned to a playful exchange about the pair's allegedly "unprofessional" working style. After Sally mixed up her paperwork during the travel bulletin, she said: "I'm very unprofessional aren't I?" "So am I but I don't care, we're still here," Rylan responded. "Only just, I'm hanging on by a thread at the moment," Sally quipped. He joked: "Where's them scissors?", prompting his co-presenter to wonder how she might "get off" the programme. "Go, literally just go!" he instructed her, laughing.

Previous 'sack me' challenge

This isn't the first time Rylan has taken aim at the BBC's advertising regulations. Earlier this month, he playfully challenged the corporation to "sack" him after supposedly breaking the rule again during a chat with Professor Green.

Introducing a game to his guest, he said: "I've been creating a new artificial intelligence machine called Rylexa, I'm looking for people to buy shares in it. If you want, we can talk after the show." Professor Green responded: "Sure. There are other AI platforms that you can invest in, isn't that what you've got to say on the BBC?" Rylan then replied: "But they're not Rylexa! Who cares? Sack me!" The singer then pleaded with the BBC: "No! Don't sack him, I'll stop listening!"
