Doctor Who writer Russell T Davies has revealed he feels 'very lucky' to have found love again with his new partner Oliver Cole, eight years after the death of his husband Andrew Smith from a brain tumour. The 63-year-old screenwriter, who entered a civil partnership with Smith in 2012, debuted his relationship with the 27-year-old Australian waiter on Christmas Day last year.
Davies Opens Up About New Relationship
Speaking on the Reasons To Be Joyful with Gaby Roslin podcast, Davies responded to praise of his 'lovely' boyfriend by saying: 'He's beautiful, isn't he? I'm very lucky.' He added: 'It's a year now – it's been a year since we started saying hello. Amazing. I'm very, very lucky.'
Davies reflected on finding love later in life: 'I was widowed eight years ago, and you kind of think well that's it - genuinely. And at 63 you do think that's it, fine, I've had a lovely time. So for this to happen, it's a great surprise and very lovely.'
Life After Andrew Smith
Davies and Andrew Smith were together for two decades before entering a civil partnership in December 2012. Smith was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2011 and given just a three per cent chance of recovery. Davies took two and a half years away from work to care for his husband, later describing it as 'the greatest work I'll ever do on this Earth'. Smith died in September 2018 at age 54.
Public Debut and Tardis Surprise
News of Davies' relationship with Cole became public on Christmas Day last year with a festive post. To mark Oliver's 27th birthday in June, Davies brought him to the Doctor Who set and treated him to a spin in the iconic Tardis.
