Richard Madeley had to apologise after his Good Morning Britain colleague Jay Akbar was caught yawning during a live report on Thursday morning.
Madeley, co-hosting with Kate Garraway, attempted to cut to Akbar for an update on a tragic incident at West Mersea beach near Colchester, Essex. However, Akbar appeared unaware he was live on air due to a sound issue, staring blankly into the camera before yawning.
Apology issued
Madeley quickly stepped in, saying: “Oh I’m sorry, he’s obviously got comms issues there. We will try again later.”
Locals fear fatalities after reports of people being pulled from the water and CPR performed. West Mersea Coastguard Rescue Team said their “thoughts are with the family involved”. Emergency services, including six ambulances, arrived around 5.30pm on Wednesday, with the RNLI first to respond.
A spokesperson said: “Tonight we have responded to a tragic incident on West Mersea beach. Our team and West Mersea Lifeboat Station – RNLI were first on scene… We will not be making any further comment on the details at this time… Our thoughts are with the family involved.”
Currents in the area are known to be strong, but the nature of the incident has not been confirmed by emergency services.
