Sam Chatto, the 29-year-old grandson of Princess Margaret, has announced his engagement to fellow artist Eleanor Ekserdjian. In a departure from royal tradition, Chatto proposed with a one-of-a-kind porcelain ring that he crafted by hand. The couple shared the news on Instagram, where Chatto posted photographs of the proposal and wrote: “I’m really delighted to say that Ellie and I are engaged. And we couldn’t be happier. I proposed with a porcelain ring which I made. @e.ekserdjian.”
A Break from Royal Engagement Ring Tradition
Royal proposals have long been associated with heirloom jewels and precious gemstones, often carrying significant family history. For instance, Sam’s mother, Lady Sarah Chatto, received a vintage sapphire and diamond engagement ring from Daniel Chatto. Sam’s decision to create a porcelain ring himself marks a striking departure from this convention.
Engagement ring expert Nilesh Rakholia, founder of Abelini, commented on the unconventional choice. He explained: “Engagement rings are often viewed through the lens of precious metals and gemstones, so Sam Chatto’s decision to create a porcelain ring himself feels like a very personal departure from tradition.”
Artistic Values and Shared Creativity
Rakholia noted that the ring reflects the couple’s artistic backgrounds. “What makes this ring particularly special is that it reflects who Sam and Eleanor are as a couple. Both are artists, with their work centred around creativity, craftsmanship and storytelling, so choosing a ring that has been made by hand feels like a natural extension of their shared values.”
He added: “Rather than selecting a traditional diamond engagement ring, Sam has created something that carries a different kind of significance. The value of this piece does not come from its materials, but from the time, skill and personal thought that have gone into making it. For many couples, that emotional connection can be just as meaningful as the financial value of a piece of jewellery.”
Sentimental Significance and Practical Considerations
The handmade ring adds a layer of sentiment, according to Rakholia. “The fact that Sam created the ring himself adds another layer of sentiment. There is something incredibly meaningful about making an object that will represent such an important moment in someone’s life, particularly for two people whose careers are built around artistic expression.”
However, he also pointed out practical limitations. “From a practical perspective, porcelain is naturally more delicate than precious metals such as gold or platinum, as well as gemstones traditionally used in engagement rings. While it can be worn carefully, it may not be the most durable choice for everyday wear over many years.”
Rakholia suggested that many couples with sentimental engagement rings often choose to wear a more durable piece alongside it in the future. “It would not be unusual for someone with a sentimental engagement ring like this to eventually pair it with a more hard-wearing wedding band or eternity ring. The porcelain ring could remain a treasured keepsake, worn on special occasions and preserving the story behind the couple’s engagement.”
Royal Family Reaction
The King is said to be delighted by the news of Sam Chatto’s engagement. Sam, who is known for his passion for ceramics, has carved out a career as an artist, and his proposal reflects his commitment to craftsmanship over convention.
