Sky News has been hit with 169 complaints to Ofcom following controversial remarks made by presenter Adam Boulton about the late Ann Widdecombe. The former Conservative politician and Reform UK spokesperson died at age 78 on July 10, 2025, after being found dead at her Devon home with serious injuries.
Boulton's Remarks Spark Outrage
During a broadcast on Monday, July 13, Boulton described Widdecombe as a “spinster” and an “old maid,” adding, “Reportedly, she claimed that she was a virgin.” The comments drew immediate criticism from viewers and social media users, with many calling them inappropriate and sexist.
One viewer wrote on social media: “Why is he so fixated on her single status? Would you EVER say that about a man in the same position?” Another described Boulton’s remarks as “bottom of the barrel.”
Boulton Apologises
Following the backlash, Boulton issued an apology, stating: “I was seriously wrong and insensitive in one of the several media appearances I made yesterday in reaction to the death of Ann Widdecombe. I got the timing and tone of my initial word portrait of her wrong.”
He clarified that his intention was to contribute as an obituarist who had known her since the 1980s, not to express personal feelings. “My choice of words on the spur of the moment was clumsy. I did not intend to offend though obviously I did,” he said. Boulton also apologised to Sky News and Times Radio for the “unwarranted” criticism they received.
Ofcom Confirms Complaints
Ofcom confirmed it had received 169 complaints about the broadcast. The watchdog will assess whether the comments breached broadcasting rules. The incident has reignited debate about media treatment of women in public life, with critics arguing that Boulton’s language was outdated and disrespectful.
