Prince William's Private Hope for a Daughter Before Fatherhood
Prince William Hoped for a Daughter Before Fatherhood

Prince William's 44th birthday coincided with Father's Day this year, prompting a heartfelt social media post from the Wales family. Kensington Palace shared a photo of William with Princess Charlotte, taken by Matt Porteous after Trooping the Colour, showing them embracing in the Kensington Palace gardens. The caption was signed by Catherine and all the children's initials.

This year's post differed from previous years. In 2024, the Palace broke with tradition by sharing a candid action shot taken by Catherine of William holding hands with Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis as they leaped off a sand dune. Last year, they posted a snap of William with their spaniel Orla and her puppies.

William's Private Wish for a Daughter

Long before becoming a father, Prince William hoped his first child would be a girl, according to royal author Russell Myers in his book William & Catherine. William wanted to honor his late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, by naming a daughter after her. Although the couple chose not to learn the gender of their firstborn ahead of time, they welcomed Prince George in 2013. Two years later, William's wish came true with the birth of Charlotte, whose full name is Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.

A Special Bond with Charlotte

Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond highlighted the unique relationship between William and Charlotte. "I think daughters and dads tend to have a very special relationship - especially when there's only one little girl in the family," she told The Sun. "I'm sure he's immensely proud of all three of his children, but there is perhaps a particular place in his heart for his sporty little Charlotte."

This close bond is often visible in public moments. During William's November visit to South Africa for the Earthshot Prize, he was spotted wearing a colorful friendship bracelet handmade for him by Charlotte.

William's Role in Changing Royal Succession

William's dedication to championing his daughter began before her birth. In the lead-up to his 2011 wedding, he proactively raised the issue of royal succession with his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. Thanks to those discussions and subsequent legal changes, the centuries-old rule of male primogeniture was abolished. This historic shift ensures that Princess Charlotte retains her place in the line of succession ahead of her younger brother, Prince Louis—a lasting legacy of a proud girl dad.
