Prince Harry is scheduled to return to the UK early next month to attend events marking the one-year countdown of the Invictus Games in Birmingham. However, it is understood that Meghan Markle and their children, Archie and Lilibet, may not accompany him.
Security Concerns Halt Family Plans
The Sussexes were planning their first UK visit in four years, but a major stumbling block has emerged. Harry's request for police protection was rejected on Friday, June 26, with his team informed that no taxpayer-funded security would be provided for the family. This decision comes after King Charles offered the family a royal property to stay in during their visit.
Sources claim Harry is distraught over the decision, made just days before their planned departure from California, according to the BBC. However, he is reportedly willing to find a way to make the trip work.
Change from Previous Stance
This development contrasts sharply with Harry's comments last year after losing his legal battle for regular police protection in the UK. He expressed a desire to reconcile with the Royal Family but voiced concerns about his family's safety. At the time, he said: "I can't see a world in which I would be bringing my wife and children back to the UK at this point and the things they're going to miss is, well, everything. You know I love my country, I always have done, despite what some people in the country have done."
Royal Residence Offer and Security Details
The Sussexes were expected to stay in the UK for five days. King Charles' offer of a royal residence would provide the family with a level of police protection while on the estate. However, once they step off the property, Harry would have to rely on his private security team from California.
Meghan was reportedly planning to join Harry at several public Invictus Games events in London and the Midlands, as well as visits to other charities he supports. If Meghan and the children do travel, it would be the first time King Charles has seen Archie and Lilibet since the late Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee in 2022.
Royal Rift: William Unlikely to Attend
While the trip could offer a chance for reconciliation, royal experts believe Prince William will be notably absent. Royal author and historian Andrew Lownie suggested the King will need to "deal with William, who clearly is adamant that they have nothing to do with Harry." Royal expert Katie Nicholl added that William's reluctance is fueled by "irritation" that Charles is "bending over backwards" to facilitate the visit. Insiders reveal that Charles and William have opposing views: Charles believes "one must forgive and move on," while William is more likely to hold a grudge and cannot forgive his brother.
