Paul McCartney was moved to tears as he reflected on the life and death of his late wife, Linda McCartney, during an appearance on comedian Amy Poehler's Good Hang podcast. The Beatles icon opened up about their life together and her love for animals, becoming visibly emotional as he recalled her memory.
Remembering Linda's Love for Animals
Paul shared: "Linda was very outspoken on that [vegetarianism] subject, to the point where ... if you were at a dinner party and someone's eating meat, she would give them trouble." In 1975, Linda and Paul decided to stop eating meat together and adopted a vegetarian lifestyle. She became an advocate and prominent campaigner for PETA before branching into the culinary world.
In addition to her bestselling cookbooks, the musician founded the popular British plant-based and vegetarian food brand, Linda McCartney Foods, in 1991. Talking to the host, Paul mimicked his late wife's confrontations, asking: "'Do you know what you're eating? It's mummy loved it.'"
An Emotional Tribute
He reflected: "She had this kind of Disney-esque view of animals; if we saw a frog in a garden, she would pick it up and not every girl would," before he could continue, Paul paused, admitting: "I'm getting emotional." Fighting back tears, the legend added: "The way she would hold it, it wouldn't hurt it."
The Hey Jude star nervously chuckled, stopping in his tracks to fan away tears, while looking up to stop them from rolling down his face. Despite his voice breaking, Paul continued: "And she would say, 'Its mummy loved it', even if it was a frog, it was like a Disney frog, to her."
Fans React to His Emotion
As Amy praised the addition of Linda's tribute in his documentary, Paul McCartney: Man on the Run, he chimed in: "She was something else, tough, tough lady," as he wiped his eyes. Fans were also moved by Paul's display of emotions, as one commented: "He is very rarely emotional in public, he is so strong and sweet all the time and Linda was as well."
Another confessed: "This is the first time I’ve seen him this emotionally moved, and I’m obsessed with this man. I think the closest he visibly came to tears was when it was about John. This ruined my day, Linda was his bluebird." "Never seen Paul get emotional in an interview before," remarked a third. As a fourth fan penned: "The way he still gets choked up about her after all these years is the realest love story in rock and roll."
Life Together and Her Passing
During their marriage, Paul and Linda raised four children together, including Heather, Linda's daughter from a previous marriage whom Paul adopted, and their children together: Mary, Stella, and James. They famously shunned typical celebrity lifestyles in favour of a quieter family life on a farm in Scotland and East Sussex. Linda tragically died in 1998 after a heartbreaking battle with breast cancer at just 56 years old.
