Paul Gascoigne, the legendary former England footballer, became emotional during a live appearance on Wednesday's Good Morning Britain. The 59-year-old, who played for England from 1988 to 1998, spoke to hosts Susanna Reid and Ed Balls about his new book and personal struggles.
Health Update and Happiness
Susanna Reid noted that Gascoigne had been honest about his ongoing battle with addiction in a previous interview. This time, he shared a positive update: "Everything's going well for us. It's probably the happiest I've been in about five years, definitely." He attributed his improved state to simple pleasures like fly-fishing and the upcoming release of his autobiography, Paul Gascoigne: Eight - The Real Gazza.
Emotional Reflection on Helping Others
While discussing his book, Gascoigne choked back tears as he reflected on its potential impact. "A lot of people have come up and said they've read it and saved their life," he said, pausing to compose himself. He tearfully added, "If that book can save one person's life, then I've done my job." He joked, "I think I should read it myself, you know! Do myself a favour."
Gascoigne emphasized his daily approach: "Every morning, I don't think about tomorrow because that's another day. I just try to keep it in the day, keep it simple." He admitted some days are hard but concluded the interview by saying, "Sorry about that... The last time I cried was in the World Cup! But I'm in a good place."
Viewer Reactions
After the interview, ITV viewers took to X (formerly Twitter) to express support. One wrote: "Good to see Gazza looking better." Another said: "Gazza looking well on #GMB." A third added: "Could listen to #Gazza all day long." A fan noted, "Gazza gets emotional as he talks about alcohol addiction and his new book. Good to hear that he's off the booze and happy." Another viewer said they had "tears in my eyes" after seeing the star looking so well.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV1 and ITVX at 6am.
