Paloma Faith Delivers Blistering Critique of Gender Reveal Culture

British singer Paloma Faith has sparked controversy with a new Instagram video posted on Tuesday, in which she vehemently criticises the practice of gender reveal parties. The 44-year-old artist, who is currently expecting her second child and first with boyfriend Stevie Thomas, used the platform to express her strong views on gender identity and societal norms.

Theatrical Instagram Performance Makes a Point

In the carefully staged clip, Faith can be seen holding both pink and blue balloons while announcing to her followers: 'It's my gender reveal post.' With dramatic flair, she teased the camera by asking: 'Is it gonna be a boy? Or is it gonna be a girl? I want all of you to know.' The performance reached its climax as she released both balloons, watching them deflate while ascending.

The singer then delivered her uncompromising verdict on gender reveals, exclaiming: 'Oh, come on, does it really matter?' With visible frustration, she continued: 'It's 2026 - do we even give a s**t about gender anymore? You bloody transphobic homophobic p****s! It'll be whatever it wants to be when it's old enough to decide its own identity for God's sake!'

Consistent Approach to Privacy and Gender

This stance aligns with Faith's longstanding approach to parenting and privacy. The singer previously refused to disclose the gender of her first child, now nine years old, until they reached three years of age. Back in 2018, she explained this decision stemmed from her belief that celebrity culture could be detrimental to children's wellbeing.

During an appearance on Good Morning Britain, the 'Changing' hitmaker elaborated: 'I refer to my child as 'they' in public. In private I refer to them as their gender. I don't believe that celebrity culture is healthy for a child.' Faith, who welcomed her daughter with ex-husband Leyman Lahcine in December 2016, has consistently championed feminist principles throughout her career.

Feminist Beliefs and Parenting Philosophy

The singer has been vocal about her feminist convictions, stating: 'Every decade is a good time to be a woman because we are absolutely amazing.' She added: 'I'm 100% a feminist. Women, all races, shapes, sizes, creeds deserve mutual respect.' Faith revealed that parenthood has profoundly shifted her perspective, explaining: 'When you become a parent, everything makes you look outward, and makes you think, what do I want to teach.'

She expressed particular joy at seeing traditional gender roles challenged, noting: 'My heart sings when I see little boys pushing buggies because that means they're learning about being caring.' In October 2017, Faith discussed her approach to gender-neutral parenting with The Mirror, stating: 'I love being a mum. I want two or three kids in all and they'll be gender neutral.'

Clarifying Intentions and Addressing Confusion

The singer has acknowledged that her terminology has sometimes caused confusion among fans. During an appearance on Lorraine, she clarified that her primary motivation was protecting her child's privacy rather than strictly enforcing gender neutrality. Faith explained: 'I think people are getting confused between the privacy element and the gender neutrality.'

She elaborated on this distinction: 'They might be shy and might not want people to know that I'm their mum so I'm not going to put that on them. So that's one thing and then the other thing is that I believe it's very important for me, for boys to learn about kindness and nurturing and dolls give boys that opportunity and then it's very important for girls to believe they can achieve anything, and be scientists, mathematicians, firefighters, whatever.'

Faith concluded by acknowledging the linguistic challenges: 'The confusion is that I used a word that means different things to different people.' The singer announced her pregnancy with Stevie Thomas in October, and has since spoken openly about her high-risk pregnancy while continuing to challenge conventional thinking about gender, parenting, and celebrity culture.
