An original Mr Blobby costume, one of only three ever made, is expected to sell for thousands of pounds at auction. The costume gained fame on the 1990s BBC show Noel's House Party and was used for outside broadcasts and stunt work, including dangling from a helicopter.
The Costume's History
The costume was originally owned by the late Mickey Wills, former Head of Entertainment at the Cricket St Thomas Blobbyland theme park in Somerset. Wills was trained by Barry Killerby, the main actor behind Mr Blobby's television appearances. At Blobbyland, Wills performed up to seven high-energy shows daily, entertaining an estimated two million visitors during the height of Blobbymania.
Significance and Resurgence
Auctioneer Andy Stowe of Auctioneum Ltd described the costume as a piece of pure British comedy history. The character has seen a resurgence recently, with appearances on The Claudia Winkleman Show and the British version of Saturday Night Live. Stowe noted that Mr Blobby remains an iconic symbol of 1990s nostalgia, still making people laugh today.
Auction Details
The costume, which includes a Baby Blobby figure, is estimated to fetch between £3,000 and £5,000 at Auctioneum's British Comedy and Memorabilia Auction on June 29. The full catalogue is available on their website.
