Oprah Winfrey has shared a new photograph on Instagram showcasing her significant weight loss, following her admission that she used a GLP-1 agonist drug, commonly known as Ozempic, to help shed the pounds. The 71-year-old talk show icon, who has been open about her struggles with yo-yo dieting, said she now views the medication as a 'tool' rather than an 'easy way out'.
In the image, Winfrey stands in her garden wearing a cerise silk blouse and black leather trousers, smiling broadly. She is holding a copy of Elizabeth Gilbert's memoir, 'All the Way to the River', which she promotes in the caption. Comments on the post were disabled, preventing direct responses from followers.
Winfrey had previously criticised those using GLP-1 drugs for weight loss, calling them an 'easy way out'. However, in December 2023, she admitted to using the medication herself, telling People magazine: 'I now use it as I feel I need it, as a tool to manage not yo-yoing.' She added that the medically approved prescription felt like 'relief, like redemption, like a gift'.
The media mogul first confirmed she was taking a GLP-1 agonist in 2023, though she did not specify which brand. Ozempic, a brand-name version, is approved in the US to treat type 2 diabetes but is widely used off-label for weight loss. Winfrey said she had recommended the drug to others before deciding to take it herself.
