'Hell on Wheels' Netflix Killer Sparks Fury with Prison Lip Filler Selfie
Netflix Killer's Prison Lip Filler Selfie Sparks Fury

Mackenzie Shirilla, the 21-year-old convicted murderer dubbed 'hell on wheels' by a judge, has ignited a fresh wave of outrage after a glamorous prison selfie went viral. The image, posted on her Instagram account managed by family and supporters, shows her with heavily overlined, glossy lips and an eyebrow slit, prompting speculation about access to cosmetic fillers behind bars.

Prison Selfie Sparks Controversy

The selfie, taken inside the Ohio Reformatory for Women, has drawn criticism as Shirilla serves two concurrent sentences of 15 years to life for the 2022 murders of her then-boyfriend Dominic Russo, 20, and his friend Davion Flanagan, 19. Reports indicate the 'lip filler' appearance was achieved using dark lip liner, lighter center shade, and high-shine gloss—cosmetics available through prison commissary, with claims supporters fund higher-end kits traded inside, according to AOL.

Case Returned to Spotlight by Netflix

Shirilla's case was thrust back into public attention by the Netflix documentary The Crash. She was convicted after evidence showed she deliberately drove a Toyota Camry at 100mph into a brick wall in a Strongsville, Ohio business park on July 31, 2022. Black box data and security footage revealed she never braked or swerved, keeping her foot 'pinned' to the accelerator until impact, prosecutors said. She survived with multiple fractures, while Russo and Flanagan died at the scene.

Retrial Petition and Conduct Issues

The selfie was posted alongside a petition for a retrial after the Ohio Supreme Court rejected her latest appeal, as lawyers missed a 365-day deadline by one day due to a leap-year mix-up. Conduct files also link Shirilla to rule-breaking, including allegedly flashing during a video visit and possessing banned items in her cell. She will not be eligible for parole until September 2037, when she will be 33.

Trial Evidence and Judge's Condemnation

At her August 2023 trial, the court heard evidence of a toxic relationship, including recordings of Shirilla threatening and degrading Russo in the weeks before the crash. Prosecutors argued she used the car as a weapon to end the relationship, treating Flanagan in the back seat as 'cargo'. Judge Nancy Margaret Russo convicted her of murder, stating Shirilla had transformed from a normal teenager into 'literal hell on wheels', carrying out a controlled mission to kill. Shirilla insists she 'blacked out' and cannot remember the crash.
