Molly-Mae Hague has faced a wave of online criticism after unveiling her newborn son Midas's nursery, with the £8,000 acrylic cot being compared to the cell used to confine fictional serial killer Hannibal Lecter. The influencer and her partner, boxer Tommy Fury, welcomed their second child earlier this month, a baby boy named Midas Thomas Fury, joining their three-year-old daughter Bambi.
Cot Mocked as 'Cage' and 'Cell'
One X user, @kloudia_tweets, described the cot as a 'cage', while another posted: 'It's the jail cell they kept Hannibal Lecter in.' The acrylic cot, which was also used by Bambi as a newborn, previously sparked outrage when its £8,000 price tag was revealed. Social media users also joked about the difficulty of cleaning the transparent plastic, predicting it would show 'handprints and stains'. A reference to the Netflix series You was made by @bubblebeexoxo, who asked: 'Is her baby named Joe Goldberg by any chance?'
'Sad Beige' Trend Under Fire
The nursery's beige and neutral colour scheme has also drawn criticism, with many accusing Hague of prioritizing aesthetics over her baby's development. @JoannaSpanner81 tweeted: 'Hideous, sterile… those poor children will never know colour.' @iamuniquexo said: 'Mums need to stop living through their aesthetic for the baby. At first glance I thought this was a dressing room. Baby rooms need colour and imagery.' @Sophh_bby asked: 'Where are the colours?' while @sharitotorres argued: 'This is the worst for a baby's learning.' Another user, @W4IT1NGROOM, quipped: 'Is she allergic to fun and colours?'
According to researchers, vibrant colours and primary hues help stimulate babies' eyesight and aid cognitive development, visual memory, and association skills. Bright colours are also associated with positivity and encourage exploration. The so-called 'sad beige baby trend' has gained traction on TikTok, with influencers opting for neutral tones. Fans of the trend argue that beige creates a calm environment, and retailers like PrettyLittleThing launched a beige baby range in 2023. Childhood development experts note that while colourless rooms have the potential to be 'inherently bad', they generally do not cause long-term issues, as babies develop good colour vision between five and eight months.
Lavish Nursery Items
Hague has also splashed out on a Hermes blanket for Midas, which typically costs over £1,500, and a cloud light previously reported to cost nearly £500, handed down from Bambi. The nursery also features name letter blocks, a reed diffuser, an elephant toy, and grey cushions.
Name Inspiration and Family Tensions
Hague explained the inspiration for Midas's name on YouTube, saying she found it in the film Real Steel starring Hugh Jackman, not Greek mythology as some assumed. Meanwhile, a source told The Sun that Tommy Fury's family feels 'excluded' and has not spent as much time with baby Midas as they would have liked. Neither Hague nor Fury has publicly addressed the rumours.
