Micah Richards to Quit Punditry After 2034 World Cup, Focus on Grassroots
Micah Richards to Quit Punditry After 2034 World Cup

Micah Richards has announced that he will step away from mainstream punditry after the 2034 World Cup, when he turns 46. The former Manchester City defender, now 38, has been a prominent figure on BBC, Sky Sports, and CBS coverage for years but insists his departure is final.

Richards Reveals Timeline for Exit

“I’ll be out of all this by the time I turn 46,” Richards told The Telegraph. “You won’t see me on any mainstream media beyond the 2034 World Cup. That will be the last time I am on the BBC or Sky or CBS. I’ve told them all this and they think I’m joking. I’m not.”

Richards, who rose to fame at Manchester City and earned 13 England caps, has become a popular pundit known for his energetic style. However, he has long planned a second career focused on social impact.

Grassroots Ambitions in Chapeltown

“I’ve given so much of my life to football since leaving school at 14, but when the time comes, I want to make a difference to people’s lives at a grassroots level – to help those who need it most, especially young people,” he said. “I come from Chapeltown in Leeds. It’s an area where there is so much talent, but a shortage of opportunity. I want to give something back. That’s my aim. I’ve no idea what form that will take, yet. There’s plenty of time to work that out.”

Richards emphasised that his commitment goes beyond typical charity work. “You see a lot of ex-footballers putting their names to foundations, which is great, but I want to do something more than giving money to charity or showing my face at an event once a year. Hopefully I can keep doing what I am doing for the next seven years – and just make sure I don’t get cancelled before then!”

Impact on Broadcasting

Richards’ decision will leave a gap in football coverage. He has been a regular on BBC’s Match of the Day and CBS’s Champions League coverage, praised for his candid analysis. His planned exit after 2034 gives broadcasters several years to adjust.

The 2034 World Cup is yet to be awarded, but Richards is certain it will be his last major tournament as a pundit. At 46, he intends to pivot fully to community work, focusing on youth development in underprivileged areas.
