Meg Matthews, the columnist and former wife of Oasis star Noel Gallagher, has revealed that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2024 and underwent a double mastectomy in March 2025.
Speaking to The Sun, Matthews, 60, said that before her diagnosis in November 2024, she had "felt great" and "would never have known" that she had any illness. It was only during a routine mammogram that doctors discovered three "pea-sized" lumps beneath her left breast.
Positive mindset after diagnosis
Matthews said she did not feel scared when she received the diagnosis. "I just thought, 'I can't break down and think, poor me. I'm strong; I'm going to get through it'," she explained. "I knew I had to stay positive because it could have gone the other way and I could have relapsed."
The mother of one, who shares daughter Anaïs Gallagher with Noel Gallagher, has previously spoken about her struggles with drugs and alcohol. In 2019, she told The Sun, "I don't do anything now. I don't smoke, take drugs, drink alcohol. I've had a little diversion here and there, but I always get back on the horse."
Treatment options and surgery
After doctors learned of her cancer diagnosis in 2024, they discussed several treatment options, including chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Matthews ultimately chose a double mastectomy, which also involved the removal of her lymph nodes.
Reflecting on the decision, she said it was "easy" because she had undergone multiple cosmetic procedures in the past. "I have had so many boob jobs; they didn't feel like mine any more anyway," she said. "I've had five or six since the age of 30. Noel gave me a boob job for my 30th birthday. No one ever knew that. He will be dying that I've said that, but it was a great gift, and he was happy about it, too."
Cancer-free after surgery
Following the operation, a pathologist told Matthews that she was cancer-free and did not need chemotherapy. She noted that she is now looking into reconstructive surgery.
Matthews has shared her journey in a new photoshoot and interview with The Sun's Fabulous Magazine and has received an outpouring of support. Actress Anna Friel replied, "Looking gorgeous. So sorry you have gone through this, Meg. What courage! Strong woman," while Hollyoaks star Davinia Taylor added, "So proud of you, my friend."
