Actress Maxine Peake has criticised J.K. Rowling for her views on transgender rights, joining a growing list of public figures to speak out against the Harry Potter author. Peake's comments come amid ongoing controversy surrounding Rowling's statements on gender identity and the transgender community.
Rowling has faced accusations of transphobia for several years, beginning with her 'liking' of a tweet critical of the transgender rights movement in 2017-2018. In 2019, she defended researcher Maya Forstater, who lost her job over transphobic social media posts. Rowling tweeted: 'Dress however you please... But force women out of their jobs for stating that sex is real?'
In June 2020, Rowling sparked further backlash by mocking the phrase 'people who menstruate', suggesting there was a word for such people. She later published a 700-word essay explaining her views, citing concerns about female healthcare, education, and safeguarding. She stated: 'I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives.'
More recently, Rowling has been named in a lawsuit over hateful cyberbullying related to Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who won gold at the Paris Olympics. Rowling called Khelif's gender into question and accused transgender Paralympian Valentina Petrillo of being a 'cheat'. These comments have been widely condemned.
Peake's attack adds to the criticism from Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts cast members, including Emma Watson, who recently stated she does not agree with Rowling's views. The debate continues to divide opinion, with Rowling maintaining her stance on sex and gender issues.
