Matt Baker and his wife Nicola have started a new chapter with their project Our Barn In The Dales. The couple, who met as teenagers, are converting a barn on Matt's parents' farm in the Durham Hills into a family home. With their children becoming more independent, they are focusing on the future.
How Matt and Nicola Met
During an appearance on Lorraine in 2024, Matt explained how they first met. He said, "I was a gymnast when I was a lot younger, and I ended up in a sort of a 1970s reenactment group that used to tour around nightclubs because I always would do backflips."
He added, "So I ended up in this Disco Inferno, it was called, and I was backflipping on stage. I used to dress up in wigs, all that, so you would never know who I was, and one of the clubs that we went to was up around the northeast in Cleethorpes, and Nicola used to go to the nights, and that weirdly is how we met."
Matt continued, "She never knew it was me. I spotted her there; it was love at first sight for me."
Marriage and Family Life
Matt and Nicola married in Winston, Teesdale, in 2004. To mark their 21st wedding anniversary in 2025, they shared photos on Instagram, writing, "Where does the time go! 21 years ago we were stood at the end of the aisle surrounded by friends, family and sheep in the churchyard to say I do - what an adventure we've had together so far…!"
The couple have two children, a son named Luke and a daughter named Molly. They balance parenting and farming with their careers. Matt told Lorraine last year, "We are such do-ers, really. We are so supportive of what each other wants to do. But yeah, we've just sort of found our way through because we sort of focus on what we're passionate about."
Nicola, who works as a physiotherapist and author, added, "And then we make the most of the time we have together. You sort of prioritise that and make the most of that."
