Sophia Maddox, the granddaughter of infamous cult leader Charles Manson, has received widespread praise after Disney+ released the trailer for her upcoming documentary, My Grandfather Charles Manson. The film, set to premiere on Hulu and Disney+ on July 22, chronicles Maddox's journey of discovering her lineage through a DNA test and confronting the dark legacy of her grandfather.
Documentary Trailer Sparks Emotional Reactions
Following the trailer's release on YouTube, viewers flooded the comments section with support. One user wrote, "I'm not really a documentary guy but this looks fascinating! It could be the next Tiger King." Another commented, "Wow Sophia is a brave human. Looking forward to this." A third remarked, "Manson has always fascinated me - The nature vs nurture aspect... This will be one interesting documentary."
The documentary, described as similar to Netflix's My Father, the BTK Killer, follows Maddox as she uncovers that she is a direct descendant of Manson. She gains access to previously unseen recordings and material due to her family connection, and even takes a personality questionnaire comparable to one Manson took, leading to startling revelations.
Emotional Toll and Family Dynamics
In the trailer, Maddox is seen struggling emotionally, saying, "I really can't do it anymore." The film also features her father, Daniel Arguelles, Manson's son, who bears a striking resemblance to the convicted killer. Before the documentary, Manson was known to have three sons—Charles Manson Jr., Charles Luther Manson, and Michael Brunner—but Maddox's existence revealed a new branch of the family tree.
Maddox told People that she began recording herself after the discovery as a coping mechanism, while her relationship with her father became increasingly strained. She explained, "What began as a way to process a shocking family discovery became a deeper investigation into generational trauma, identity, and whether we're destined to repeat the stories we inherit." She added, "Ultimately, I hope the film reminds people that while we can't choose where we come from, we can choose what we do with that history."
Charles Manson's Legacy of Violence
Manson and his followers, known as the Manson Family, were convicted of murdering actress Sharon Tate—who was pregnant at the time—along with two others during a two-night killing spree in 1969. He was also found guilty of two additional murders. The crimes shocked America and remain etched in the national memory. Manson died in 2017 at age 83 after four decades in prison.
My Grandfather Charles Manson streams on Disney+ and Hulu starting July 22.
