Manilow Postpones Shows Again Following Cancer Surgery

Barry Manilow Forced to Reschedule More Performances Amid Cancer Recovery

Music legend Barry Manilow has announced further postponements to his concert schedule as he continues to recover from lung cancer surgery. The 82-year-old singer, best known for hits like "Copacabana" and "Mandy," revealed his diagnosis in December, stating the cancer was detected early. He underwent a procedure to remove a spot from his left lung, initially delaying his Las Vegas residency and several tour dates.

Surgeon's 'Very Depressing' Assessment Halts Comeback Plans

In a social media post on Friday, Manilow described his recent medical consultation as "very depressing." Despite rigorous preparation, including using a treadmill three times daily to build stamina for his upcoming arena tour, his surgeon strongly advised against returning to the stage prematurely.

The surgeon warned Manilow directly, stating, "Barry, you won't be ready to do a 90-minute show. Your lungs aren't ready yet. You're in great shape considering what you've been through, but your body isn't ready. You shouldn't do the first arena shows. You won't make it through."

Manilow acknowledged the difficult reality, writing, "Deep down, I wanted to go back. But, my body knew what my heart didn't want to admit: I wasn't ready." Consequently, he has rescheduled his "first batch" of concerts originally slated for February 27 through March 17.

Revised Performance Schedule and Ongoing Healing

The surgeon indicated that Manilow might be able to perform his Las Vegas shows by the end of March and resume arena concerts starting in April. "I'm so, so sorry I have to reschedule some of these first arena shows again," Manilow expressed, apologising to fans for the continued disruptions.

However, the Grammy-winning artist remains determined, vowing, "I will come back." He expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from fans through notes and phone calls, noting, "The doctor said that my body had been through hell and that it needed time to heal. So, I'm going back to healing."

This latest postponement follows an earlier announcement this month where Manilow delayed his Las Vegas residency dates at Westgate Las Vegas from February 12-21. At that time, he explained the decision was made with his doctor's guidance to focus on recovery and preparation for his tour, originally set to begin in late February.

Career Context and 'The Last Concerts'

The affected shows are part of what has been promoted as Manilow's farewell tour, listed on his official website as "The Last Concerts." His illustrious career spans over six decades, during which he has:

  • Released more than 30 studio albums
  • Produced iconic hits including "Copacabana," "Mandy," and "Can't Smile Without You"
  • Earned numerous accolades, including Grammy Awards

Key albums like 1978's Even Now feature some of his most beloved tracks, solidifying his status as a enduring figure in popular music. Despite the current health challenges, Manilow's commitment to returning to the stage reflects his dedication to his craft and his audience.
