Madonna has once again pushed boundaries with her latest film, a raunchy 13-minute visual experience celebrating her upcoming album Confessions II. The 67-year-old pop icon premiered the movie at the Tribeca Film Festival, featuring a star-studded lineup of cameos including Sabrina Carpenter, Kate Moss, Benedict Cumberbatch, and footballers Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro.
A Fever Dream of Dance and Provocation
The film opens with Madonna reflecting on her love for the dance floor, stating, "Out here on the dance floor, I feel so free." The scene quickly shifts to a woodland where she lies with laser beams shooting from her nether regions, surrounded by dancers emitting lights. She later joked to Anderson Cooper that the lasers can "get quite hot."
Easter Eggs and Nostalgic Nods
Madonna weaves in references to her past hits, including Deeper and Deeper and Open Your Heart. At one point, she recreates a dance routine reminiscent of Hung Up while hopping on a table. A car crash scene leads into a club filled with scantily clad partiers, where Julia Garner makes a blink-and-you-miss-it cameo dressed as Madonna from the Vogue music video.
Sabrina Carpenter's Intimate Moment
Sabrina Carpenter, who collaborated with Madonna on the track Bring Your Love, appears in a lengthy scene writhing on the floor before joining Madonna on stage for an intimate performance that electrified the crowd. The Taste singer's cameo was one of the film's highlights.
Bathroom Revelry and Celebrity Cameos
The film takes a surreal turn in a bathroom where Madonna, wearing a shiny blue mini dress and silver boots, performs while men line up at urinals. She grabs a man and heads to a cubicle for a steamy encounter, with Richard E Grant dancing in the adjacent stall. Benedict Cumberbatch, Odessa A'zion, Gwendoline Christie, and Kate Moss are among the celebrities letting loose in the main bathroom.
Lourdes Leon's Starring Role
Madonna's daughter, Lourdes "Lola" Leon, walks up to the camera and declares, "I wish a motherf**ker would." The 29-year-old guides viewers through the party, where revelers thrash in beds, drink champagne, and smoke in a bathtub. In a meta moment, they watch footage of Madonna from earlier in the film while eating bananas. As the credits roll, Lourdes simply says, "Cut, b***h."
Fan Reactions and Album Anticipation
Fans have praised the film on YouTube, calling it "iconic" and a "cultural event." One viewer wrote, "Madonna shows up with a whole film for 6 songs. This is what music video culture used to mean." Another added, "This isn't just a series of videos, this is an IMMERSIVE VISUAL EXPERIENCE!"
Madonna's 15th studio album, a follow-up to 2005's Confessions On A Dancefloor, is set for release on July 3. After shutting down Times Square for a pop-up performance with Grindr, she is reportedly in talks for a similar concert in London. An insider revealed that while a full world tour isn't planned, Madonna is considering a handful of live show options.
