Lucy Fallon: Corrie pregnancy 'won't end well'

Coronation Street actor Lucy Fallon has revealed her character Bethany Platt is pregnant by her mother's ex-partner, a storyline she says "is not going to end well."

Fallon, 30, said her "jaw was on the floor" upon learning of the twist, which was revealed in Tuesday night's episode. Her character, who has appeared in the ITV soap intermittently since 2015, became pregnant following a brief encounter with Detective Constable Kit Green, played by Jacob Roberts, who was imprisoned at the time. Kit is the former boyfriend of Bethany's mother, Sarah Platt, played by Tina O'Brien.

Fallon on Bethany's reaction

Speaking about the pregnancy reveal, Fallon said: "My jaw was on the floor. I think it's so good that now they have got to face the consequences of what they've done and they can't just brush it under the carpet in the way that they wanted to. It's adding a whole other level of drama for the audience."

The actress said her character's tryst with Kit "just happened," adding: "I don't actually know what she was thinking. I think they both were in quite a bad place at the time."

Fallon described Bethany as feeling "shocked and devastated" after discovering she is pregnant, explaining: "It's not a situation that she wants to be in. She's got to make a decision whether she goes ahead with it or whether she gets a termination – and that's quite traumatic in itself."

Impossible position for the character

Reflecting on the repercussions, Fallon said: "I think it's going to eat away at her until one day she can't take it anymore. I think right now it's deny, deny, deny. Coming clean is not an option, especially if she wants to keep a relationship with her mum because she would have the right to never speak to either of them again – the whole family would, it's not even just Sarah. She's stuck in an impossible position right now."

Viewers have recently seen Bethany rekindle a romance with Ryan Connor, played by Ryan Prescott, and Fallon called the pregnancy "a massive spanner in the works" for their budding relationship.

The actress expressed excitement for the drama to come, adding: "I think any scenes with the Platt family are always the best. I feel like the future drama that could happen now with everyone is exciting. There's so many ways this could go, if and when it all comes out. It's going to be so good and really fun to play."
