A Buckinghamshire coroner has provided an update on the ongoing investigation into the death of former One Direction star Liam Payne, which occurred in Argentina last year. Senior coroner Crispin Butler told a pre-inquest review in Buckinghamshire on Thursday that there had been no new evidence from Argentine authorities since the last hearing in January.
“Since the last pre-inquest review, we have had no further disclosure of evidence from Argentina via the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office,” Mr Butler said. He added that documentation received prior to the hearing had been translated and would be shared with Payne’s family, who were not present at the brief hearing at Beaconsfield Coroner’s Court.
Payne, 31, died on October 16 2024 after falling from a third-floor balcony of the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires. A post-mortem examination attributed his death to multiple traumas and internal and external haemorrhage. In February 2025, an Argentine court dropped charges of criminal negligence against three of the five people initially charged in connection with his death.
The inquest has been adjourned until a further pre-inquest review scheduled for December 1. Mr Butler noted that investigations are continuing and he awaits further developments.
