Lena Dunham's hit series Girls will return for a limited run on HBO. The sitcom, which premiered in 2012, follows four millennial friends navigating their lives in New York City and made stars of its cast, including Dunham, Adam Driver and Allison Williams.
Five-episode special confirmed
The revival will consist of five episodes, with Dunham reprising her role as Hannah Horvath, Williams as Marnie Michaels, Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna, Jemima Kirke as Jessa and Andrew Rannells as Elijah. Production is set to begin in 2027, nearly a decade after the original series wrapped.
News of the revival was announced on Tuesday with a video released by HBO featuring the original four cast members on a video call.
Cast reactions and legacy
In the video, Dunham said: "OK. So we used to spend like every summer together, you know, doing this thing that we do, making this show. And is it something that you would want to do again? Are you are you free next summer? Are you in?"
As they all agreed, Rannells appeared on the call and said: "I'm in, but only because you trash cans need constant supervision." Dunham ends the call with a final question: "Seriously, can we still call it Girls? Cause we're like old as f…"
The original series ran for six seasons and also starred Driver as Adam Sackler, Hannah's on-again-off-again boyfriend, though it was not confirmed if he would return for the revival. The show was controversial at the time for its frank depiction of sex, with Dunham frequently appearing nude or partially clothed.
Dunham's recent projects
Dunham was also behind the Netflix series Too Much, about an American woman in her 30s who relocates to London and falls in love with a British musician, mirroring her own life and romance with her husband, whom she married in 2021. The revival news comes weeks after Dunham welcomed her first child with husband Luis Felber via surrogate.
