Jon Snow Faces Alzheimer's but Continues to Change the World in Final Documentary
Jon Snow Alzheimer's Documentary: A Last Big Story Review

Jon Snow may have Alzheimer's, but he's still changing the world. In his final documentary, 'A Last Big Story,' the veteran newsreader shares his experience living with the disease while uncovering one of the biggest stories of his life.

Jon Snow's Final Investigation

Directed by Laura Warner, the feature-length documentary airs on Channel 4 tonight. It begins as a film about a man whose mind is in decline but transforms into an extraordinary story of a journalist who uncovers a major environmental disaster in Zambia.

During a safari trip to Victoria Falls, Snow learns about a mining disaster allegedly covered up by officials. Toxic waste has leaked into the Kafue River, polluting the Zambezi River and poisoning millions of fish, plants, and animals, affecting a community of at least 1,000 people.

Living with Alzheimer's

The film is frank about Snow's condition. In one appointment, doctors assess his Alzheimer's progression, and he cannot remember three words—bus, door, and rose—even with prompting. He also doesn't know the month or day.

Snow's wife, Dr. Precious Lunga, a neuroscientist, is hesitant to discuss the future. Their priority is challenging the stigma surrounding Alzheimer's. Snow says, 'At the beginning, I wanted to hide it. There's so much prejudice. Any sort of hint of mental decay and you're sort of dead.'

Uncovering the Truth

Despite his condition, Snow's journalistic instincts remain sharp. He returns to Africa with his friend and former colleague Ben de Pear. With the help of Zambian campaigners, Snow uncovers one of the worst mining and ecological disasters of modern times.

He meets locals who share the scale of the disaster. Snow guides around a field that has been dead for weeks, everything wilted and lifeless. He asks the right questions repeatedly, showing his determination.

The team attends a compensation meeting where devastated victims seek fair compensation. One man claims he was told he'd receive $15,000 over his lifetime, but that feels worthless when his entire neighborhood has been destroyed. Armed police shut down the meeting, forcing the team to flee.

Snow speaks to a campaigner, Sarah, whose father was killed by mining activity when she was a little girl. She walks away in tears, but Snow's kindness and sincerity convince her to return to filming.

A Global Impact

The story becomes too important to wait for the documentary's release. Snow agrees to leak it to the press, and it becomes global news, sparking outrage worldwide.

'A Last Big Story' is filmmaking at its best, capturing the kindness, humility, and humanity of one of the UK's defining journalists. If this film becomes his legacy, it celebrates a broadcaster who has given his life to journalism and making the world a better place.

The documentary airs tonight on Channel 4 at 8pm and will be available to stream on All 4.
