Ivan Toney's Son Asks Why He's Not Playing at World Cup
Ivan Toney's Son Questions His World Cup Role

Ivan Toney has opened up about his son's heartbreaking reaction to his limited role at the World Cup, revealing the young boy was more interested in seeing Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice than his own father.

The England striker, selected by Thomas Tuchel for the tournament despite playing in the Saudi Pro League for Al-Ahli, insists he deserves a place for more than just his penalty-taking ability. However, his son's blunt question cut deep.

Family Support and Harsh Reality

Toney's family flew out to support him at the World Cup, which he described as a "great honour." But his son quickly brought him back down to earth. "Yeah, they came over, my son is starting to get into football a lot more. He's starting to kill me a bit more. He's saying: 'Why am I coming all this way and not playing?' It's hard to respond to that. 'Daddy's waiting for it,'" Toney said.

The striker added: "He has gone to see them boys, not me. After the game, it was first time he's seen me and went to give him a big hug and he brushed me aside and said, 'Where's Saka? Where's Dec?'... 'I miss you too, boy!'"

More Than Just Penalties

Toney, who boasts an exceptional record from 12 yards and has perfected a no-look penalty technique, believes he offers more than just a spot-kick option. "I like to think I bring more than just penalties. I like to think I am a good player also," he said.

"I think I can bring more to the game. But if I'm just to come on for one minute and take a penalty I'd never turn that down, I'm here to help the team. There are players that are playing, you have to be ready to take your chance. But I'm here now, I have done something right and hopefully I get my chance now."

Tuchel's Honesty

Toney acknowledged that Tuchel has been candid about his likely role as an impact substitute, which has helped the striker stay focused. "I always believe in myself. I know what I'm capable of. If I get the chance, I know I'm going to take my chance. You always have to believe in yourself and what you can do," Toney said.

The former Brentford star added: "Regardless of where you are in the world, there are still things to progress with and still a chance to show yourself on different stages. It might not be the biggest stage but I am still scoring goals and still doing my job."

Ready to Seize the Moment

Toney represents a formidable option off the bench — a genuine centre-forward who knows how to find the net. With the tournament progressing, he remains patient but ready. "I think with how the games are going, it is going to be a chance for some players to prove themselves. In the squad everyone is training well, everyone is excited for everyone. But as I've said before the coach is in charge and I have to respect his decision whether I think I should be on the pitch or not," he concluded.
