Inbetweeners extra reveals filming secrets

An extra who appeared in The Inbetweeners Movie has revealed what it was really like to film the iconic British comedy, disclosing that one scene took hours to shoot. Shane Heron appeared in the 2011 film as a tall extra in the school assembly scene, where the characters gather for their leavers' assembly.

While fans might imagine a major film set is all glitz and glamour, Shane's experience involved an early start, a long journey and hours spent getting the scene in the can. Speaking exclusively about his time on set, Shane revealed the production managed to film everything he was involved in during a single day.

One-Day Shoot and Long Journey

Shane said in collaboration with Heart Bingo: “We managed to get everything done all in one day. It was from 9am until 4pm in the afternoon.” He travelled from Devon to London, where the assembly scene was filmed, a journey that took around six to seven hours to complete the scene.

Shane also gave insight into the costume requirements, explaining that extras were expected to arrive already dressed in their school uniforms. “I remember we were told to arrive in our costume, which was the basic uniform of a white button-up shirt, black shoes, black trousers, and then they would add other bits of costume like the blue sweatshirt, or just a tie,” he explained. “Everyone was different, but I didn’t get any makeup done or anything.”

No Chat With the Stars

Despite not getting the chance to talk to the film's main stars, Shane said he was keen to stay professional while on set. When asked whether the cast were as funny and chaotic behind the scenes as their characters, he admitted he hadn't spoken to them personally.

He said: “Unfortunately, I didn't speak to any of the main cast members, but I know a lot of people did. The way I saw it was that they were at work, and I was being paid to be at work, so I didn't want to be a nuisance.”

Hoping for a Return

Now, with a third Inbetweeners film announced for Netflix, Shane is hoping he could get another chance to be part of the comedy franchise. He added: “When I saw the little Netflix teaser that came out, I was so excited. It's great it's getting all rounded off. There's been so much speculation, and now we're finally going to find out. It's such an iconic British comedy.”

Shane added that returning to the set would be an easy decision, as the original film was his first experience as an extra. He added: “If I were asked to apply to be in it again, my answer is automatically yes. I introduced my wife to The Inbetweeners, so if I could go back and be a part of the third film, I would jump at the chance.”
