Idris Elba Rules Himself Out of James Bond Role

Sir Idris Elba has officially ruled himself out of playing James Bond, putting an end to decades of speculation that he would become the first Black 007. The 53-year-old star of Hijack revealed in a new interview that he was never truly in the running for the iconic role.

Idris Elba Addresses Bond Rumours

Speaking to GQ, Elba stated: "It was never legit. It was always just a rumour." He explained that while he was flattered by the speculation, he believes some international markets are not ready for a Black James Bond. "James Bond was written how he was written for a reason. But I was complimented by it. And also, I think, in realistic terms, some markets just don't go for that. Bond is big all over the world. And [audiences] won't [all] go for a Black male, an African male, playing Bond. That's not what they like in their culture. Period."

No Interest in 'Woke' Bond

The actor also expressed his desire to keep the franchise true to its escapist roots. "Bond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good, but let's not try and make it woke. I think you've got to be pure to what it is: escapism. Don't try and answer the world's taste. Just be Bond."

This follows comments made last month, when Elba told People magazine that he was "not in the race ever." He noted that producers are looking for a younger actor, saying, "They're going younger. And I wish them all the luck in the world. I can't wait - it's going to be amazing."

Rumours Began in 2008

The speculation about Elba playing Bond first emerged in 2008, when former US President Barack Obama suggested the world was ready for a Black 007 at the Italian premiere of Quantum of Solace. Despite being a fan favourite for years, Elba revealed that the conversation around race made the prospect off-putting. In 2023, he described the racist backlash as "disgusting and off-putting."

Current Search for Next Bond

Daniel Craig stepped down from the role in 2021 after his fifth film, No Time To Die. Since then, frontrunners for the next Bond include Callum Turner, Jack Lowden, Jacob Elordi, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Amazon MGM Studios, producing the new film, stated: "The search for the next James Bond is underway. While we don't plan to comment on specific details during the casting process, we're excited to share more news with 007 fans as soon as the time is right."
