Hugh Laurie Roasts Critic of 'House' in Viral Exchange

Actor and comedian Hugh Laurie delivered a sharp retort to a social media user who criticized the medical drama series House, which aired from 2004 to 2012. The show starred Laurie as Dr. Gregory House, a brilliant but unconventional diagnostician leading a team at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital.

The 66-year-old star, known for his role in Blackadder, was the target of a lengthy critique from viewer Janet Murray on X. She claimed each episode followed the same formula: a patient with a mysterious illness, Dr. House making incorrect diagnoses, the patient nearly dying, and House ultimately having a last-minute insight to save them. Murray questioned, 'Eight seasons of this?' Her post garnered over 1.4 million views.

Laurie responded with sarcasm, writing, 'Thanks for your critique, Janet. We actually tried a couple of episodes where House gets it right first time, but they were only six minutes long. NBC weren't happy. Then we tried some where House never gets it right and the patient dies. The audience wasn't happy.'

He continued, drawing parallels to other art forms: 'One could apply your trenchant analysis to other art forms: JS Bach wrote 30 Goldberg variations on the same chord structure; Frida Kahlo painted 50 portraits of herself; Henry Moore, what? The point is, or was, variations on a theme; if all you see is hospital, medical blah blah, then it wasn't meant for you. Nonetheless, I look forward to your first novel!'

Laurie's response prompted reactions from other users. One commented, 'Oh crikey, Janet! I'd take this one on the chin, mate. I cannot be more objective, I'm afraid, as I'm rather envious that you got roasted by Hugh Laurie himself.' Murray later admitted, 'Apparently it is a badge of honour.'

Another user questioned Laurie's effort, to which he replied, 'I put no more effort into my message than you have into yours. It just happens to be closer to my heart.' The exchange highlights Laurie's quick wit and the enduring legacy of House.
