The Black Bull, a Grade II-listed mock Tudor pub in Gateacre Village, has been serving customers since 1753 and is rumored to be haunted by a resident ghost named Charlie. Shift supervisor Sue Bowcock, 54, from Speke, has worked there for three years and describes the pub's unique blend of history, ghostly encounters, and community spirit.
History and Heritage
Originally called the Bull Inn, the pub operated as a coaching inn for travellers. It retains original cobbles and period features, with an extension added in the late 19th century. The back room still showcases original architectural details.
Famous Visitors and Ghostly Tales
Notable regulars include Liverpool FC legend John Aldridge and Coronation Street actor Tony Maudsley. The resident ghost, Charlie, is said to have been a former employee who was imprisoned, causing him to haunt the pub. Bowcock recalls hearing her name called and other unexplained occurrences, calling it "scary."
Community and Day Trips
Bowcock organizes events such as singers, afternoon teas, 80s nights, and day trips. She recently arranged a coach trip to Chester Races with staff and regulars, followed by a group return to watch an England match. A WhatsApp group has been created for future trips, with customers eager for the next outing.
Best-Selling Drinks and Atmosphere
The pub's best-selling drinks are cask ales, with Madri and Carling popular among men, and prosecco and wines favored by women. Bowcock emphasizes the friendly, inclusive atmosphere where old and young customers mix seamlessly, with no divide.
Supporting Local Pubs
Bowcock encourages people to support their local pub by simply returning. She notes that the team's rapport with guests and the comfortable, community-focused environment keep customers coming back.
